Change doesn’t happen in a vacuum. No one changes their ways just for the heck of it. But if one must change, they’d better do it for the right reasons. Being neutral is a safer bet than adhering to any military alliance. Nobody owes anyone anything. Protection doesn’t come gratis. And sometimes the price is your own existence.

Promises have no role to play in politics. They are less reliable than cheap toilet paper. National Security cannot be entrusted in the care of foreign powers. Neutrality means nothing today because it is based on a gentlemen’s agreement. As international treaties go they cannot replace hard military power for defence against aggression. If a foreign power sees an in, they will exploit it. It is the job of statesmen to bridge those security gaps left open by their gullible predecessors. War and Peace depend on it!

The Swiss became rich because they played it smart, staying out of European and World conflicts for 507 years. That’s a long stretch. Now, they decided to take sides. Unfortunately, History is replete with brutal reminders of what happens when people forget their lessons. The price of adventurous folly is always steep. Caveat emptor!
