Family Above All Else

Daily writing prompt
What relationships have a positive impact on you?

When everything disappoints you, there’s one corner of your world you can count on: your family.

Not your next of kin, mind you. Those will either smother you with their love. Or just astonish you with their disappearing act. Some of your parents won’t even be there for you while you grow from a chicklet into a full blown hawk ready to spread his wings. Others will prefer the quiet seclusion of their familiar quarters to uprooting their existence and resettling overseas.

But in the end, your family is where you drop your anchor. And once you do, you need to make it your safe haven, your deep port, your general headquarters.

Because that is your fort, your fastnet, your castle: where your family’s at.

The only positive relationship you will ever have is that with your children and spouse. All others are, as it turns out, circumstantial as fuck. And given their transient nature, you cannot build on them. Most parents tend to depart their mortal coil before their offspring. So that’s that, I guess. How can you build something on that?!

As it happens, nowadays children tend to outlive their parents. That is where you want to focus your attention, protection and care.

As JFK once said “Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country,” the same can be said about relationships.

Ask not what your family can do for you, but what you can do for your family.

The answers is all encompassing, takes all your time on Earth, and is very simple:

ALL, DO IT ALL!
