What’s the one luxury you can’t live without?
The second most expensive gift nature or Providence provided you at birth, right after the gift of Life, is the luxury of company.
They say that you need to make yourself indispensable if you want to be appreciated by others and never lack for work.
But what they should say is this.
In your life, you may strike many friendships. You will build a family. And if you’re really, really lucky you will have both family and friends for a long time.
Odds are you won’t have either.
And that’s ok. You’re not perfect. Nobody is.
Friends, and family, come and go through the revolving door of the train station you call your life.
Through estrangement, lack of care, a tendency to correct and put things to rights, when all you need do is agree, politely nod, and move on, regardless of the ineptitudes and mundanities uttered by your entourage, you will manage to alienate both.
But if there’s one thing, one luxurious thing that you won’t be able to live without is that annoying opinion others form about you.
I call it luxury but it’s not.
It’s The Most Important Thing on Earth.
What others think of you impacts you even when you say it doesn’t.
Loneliness gets old fast. You’re not happier alone in splendid isolation than you are in an imperfect life, dominated by the opinions of others.
The one luxury you can’t live without is the opinion of your family and friends. And that, you cannot buy.
For everything else, there’s Visa or Mastercard.
