The Common Sense of Good Old Times

Nowadays we take for granted the relative safety and security of the Big Daddy enclosed societies we live in.

But there were times, much simpler times when responsibility for oneself belonged to each and every one.

For instance, back then, 100 or 150 years ago, if there was a danger in the neighbourhood, people, heads of families, but also their wives, parents, children would get a means of defense and either carry it on their persons or kept it close to them

This was common sense, especially if wildlife or criminals were abroad. And nobody would blink an eye if their neighbours were seen carrying arms about themselves in the broad light. It was a natural reaction to an outside stimuli that spelled danger.

But somehow, over the last century or so, we have become impervious to common sense, and we started to allow third parties to convince us that we do not need weapons to have security.

Instead our security needs became centred on having the means to connect to a standby security service supposed to serve and protect. We called that the police.

The problem with that rationale is that any third parties will be late on the scene of a crime, most likely unable to prevent it, and most probably would end up collecting the evidence of a tragedy rather than forestall it.

And people used to know that. Because they used their common sense and reasoned that it was better for the safety of their persons to be able to react or act fast in the face of danger than to wait until someone else showed up, became aware of the situation, assessed it, and intervened.

Why is it then that we allowed ourselves to become so dumb and insensible to the fact of the matter as to allow for the miserable and sorry state we are in today?!

Are we that daft we prefer the certainty of a chalk contour on the ground to the cold responsibility of discharging the protection mandate of our species?
