I stumbled upon these words in my online perambulations.
“Democracy is merely an illusion to mask oligarchic power. Next week on Planet: Critical, George Monbiot on the farce that is our political system, including governing by “Presumed Consent”: ‘If we don’t accept the principle of presumed consent in sex, why would we accept it in politics?’
George Monbiot
Finally, I said to myself, someone who pulls the mask off the smug face of the Elite.
For Democracy is a farce. It is a veil masking the hideousness of the Elite Controlling every facet of our supposed Free Lives. What a bunch of croc…
250 years ago, the Elite realized that the wind of democratic change, of expanding the electoral franchise to the destitute, was starting to blow. And they felt threatened by it. They wanted to ride the Change. So, they appropriated It. They took it over. Just like that.

They stole it from the masses of disenfranchised people, who starved, and worked for peanuts. And they created the illusion of freedom. But Freedom is an empty word if you do not have the means to earn your living. You cannot pay the mortgage with Freedom.
The Elite never had our Presumed Consent. They never asked anyone for anything. They told the people Jump, and the People asked How High. Of course, they did not ask the question like that.
Instead, they asked the People: Do you want Freedom? And the People said: Hell, yeah.
But Freedom is not given. For something given, has no value, people. Zero value.
In order for something to have value, one must fight, sacrifice for it, and even die trying to secure it.
Remember this next time the government tells you they gave you freedom.
It’s like this, really. You don’t need a Priest to believe in God. So, why would you need Government to enjoy Freedom? Why do we always seek a go‑between, an intermediary between us and God, between us and Freedom?
If we must have rules, let us be the ones who make them, abide by them, and live by them. We all know that assumption is the mother of screwup. But government gets away with it all the time by taking our consent for granted. They ‘presume’ it.
It is perhaps time for everybody to stop assuming, presuming, or taking anything for granted. How about we do that?
