Romanian is not the Mother of Latin – Part 2

Romania is a country, the country of my birth, one of many countries on this beautiful Earth of ours.

It is a beautiful land with good and bad people, like all others.

Romania is many other things.

However, the land occupied by Romania is not, nor has it ever been the mythical place of birth of Latin.

Romanians, like most peoples and people, need to feel different, better than they do. I don’t know why but they do have this nagging need of having to prove something to the world.

I believe this is why this far fetched, Munchausenesque anachronistic theory that Romanian was the Mother of Latin, came to be.

It was born out of a desire to feel special. But fellow Romanians, you are special like all other people, no more no less. To claim otherwise, is to delude yourselves.

Trust me when I say this, being born the citizen of any country has no merit in and of itself. You just are. Taking pride in your nationality is the most sycophantic thing there is. Did you have any say into how your ancestors met and where? No. Then shut up, will you!

In the end, take heed of President Kennedy’s immortal words of wisdom and try to live by them, if you must:

Ask not what your country can do for you—ask what you can do for your country.

JFK, Oath of Office, 20 January 1961
